On July 20, 2025, Republican Representative Mark Green announced his resignation from Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, effective immediately. Green’s resignation came as a surprise to many and was attributed to his decision to accept a private sector position.

In his statement, Green expressed gratitude for his time serving the district but stated that it was time for him to move forward in his career. His resignation triggered the need for a special election, with the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office confirming that the primary election will take place on October 7, 2025. The general election to fill Green’s seat is scheduled for December 2, 2025.

This seat, which covers much of Middle Tennessee, is considered a safe Republican stronghold. With Green’s departure, political analysts expect the special election to maintain the district’s current political alignment, though multiple candidates from both major parties are expected to enter the race.

Governor Bill Lee, who is tasked with overseeing the election process, expressed confidence in the integrity of the election, adding that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure transparency and fairness. This election will be a pivotal event for Tennessee’s political landscape, as it will determine the next representative for the district until the next regular election cycle.

Voters in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District will have the opportunity to cast their ballots in both the primary and general elections. For further information on how to participate, voters can consult the Tennessee Secretary of State’s official website.
