Reed City Celebrates 150th Anniversary with Community Festivities

Reed City, Michigan, celebrated its 150th anniversary over the weekend, marking a milestone in its history with a weekend full of festivities. From July 17 to July 20, 2025, the city transformed into a hub of community pride and reflection on its past, with an extensive lineup of events that engaged residents of all ages.

The celebration, coordinated by the Reed City Sesquicentennial Committee under the leadership of Charles Lupo, paid tribute to the city’s founding and the generations that have built its legacy. One of the main events, the time capsule ceremony on July 19, allowed residents to contribute mementos and letters, which will be sealed and reopened in 2075. In addition, a “Battle for the Best Slider” food contest took center stage, bringing together local chefs and restaurants competing for the title of Reed City’s top slider maker.

The festivities continued with a Kids Jamboree, which featured a “Touch a Truck” exhibit, giving children an opportunity to explore various vehicles, from fire trucks to dump trucks. The Grand Parade on July 19 was another highlight, where residents dressed in vintage clothing and displayed historically-themed floats, celebrating the city’s industrial roots.

As part of the ongoing celebration, the community came together for the final events on July 20. A special service was held at the community church, followed by a cookout, while the Sesquicentennial Shootout, a local shooting competition, added a unique local touch. Proceeds from the celebrations are being funneled into the development of a Veterans Memorial Park, which will serve as a lasting tribute to Reed City’s service members.
