Jakob Gentry, author and former United States Air Force serviceman, is advancing his self-published book, Remember Me When September Comes, toward a film adaptation. Released in February 2024, the book follows the journey of Jason Hendley, a United States Government employee assigned to war-torn Baghdad who must unravel the murder mystery of his friend Scott Sandoval in Dubai. Gentry describes the story as a blend of 13 Hours and A Million Little Things, combining the chaos of the Iraq war with the discovery of unexpected friendships amid betrayal and conflict.

The novel has gained a dedicated audience attracted by its blend of emotional depth and moments of lighthearted humor. This response has encouraged Gentry to pursue adaptation into a screenplay alongside screenwriter Darren Cogan. Represented by Kayla Bramante at Storyteller Talent Agency (STA) in Calabasas, California, the collaboration aims to bring the narrative’s immersive adventure through the streets of Dubai and Baghdad to the screen.

Darren Cogan, co-writer of the screenplay, brings a diverse professional background to the project. With a law degree from Chapman University School of Law and a Master’s in Business Administration from Georgetown University, Cogan balances his career as an IT management consultant with his work as a multi-award-winning writer and filmmaker. His accolades include recognition for Lifeless: A Musical Zomedy. Known for combining humor with heartfelt storytelling, Cogan resides in the Los Angeles area and has increasingly made a name for himself in film and television as both a screenwriter and producer.

Jakob Gentry’s background provides a distinct perspective to the story’s authenticity. After high school in the San Francisco Bay Area, Gentry served over four years in the United States Air Force as an avionics maintenance technician on fighter aircraft, with postings in southern California and the Netherlands. He subsequently worked in Silicon Valley’s electronics industry before transitioning to the television and film industry in 1996. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, he worked alongside notable actors such as Robin Williams and Don Johnson. In 2005, Gentry shifted careers again, entering national defense and security.

Gentry’s experience in Iraq, where he spent one year in Baghdad and three years in Kuwait as a civilian during the Iraq war, informs much of the book’s setting and narrative. Prior to his retirement in 2023, he served as a Special Investigator conducting national security investigations for the United States Government. Gentry’s extensive travels to over thirty countries and his residence in Oakdale, California, further contribute to the global and nuanced viewpoints reflected in his writing.

The partnership between Gentry and Cogan represents a merging of lived experience with cinematic storytelling expertise. Both bring unique skill sets outside traditional Hollywood channels, resulting in a project grounded in real-world perspectives and crafted for broader audiences. The screenplay for Remember Me When September Comes continues to evolve under the guidance of Storyteller Talent Agency, with hopes to see the story realized as a feature film in the near future.

The narrative’s combination of mystery, war, and friendship distinguishes it in both literary and cinematic markets. Readers and viewers alike are invited into a story that traverses complex geopolitical landscapes while offering personal and emotional resonance. Gentry’s journey from military service and national security to author and film collaborator underscores the evolving nature of storytelling today.
