Clippers Set to Bounce Back in Game 2 Against Nuggets
Following a tough overtime loss to the Denver Nuggets, the Los Angeles Clippers are quickly shifting their focus to Game 2 of the Western Conference playoffs. The Clippers fell 112-110, plagued by a series of turnovers that proved costly as they look to even the series before returning home.
Addressing Turnover Issues
The Clippers committed 20 turnovers during the opening game, a number that allowed the Nuggets to score 29 points off these mistakes. Star player James Harden, who led the team with 22 points, expressed his frustration over the self-inflicted turnovers, acknowledging the need for improvement:
“Those turnovers were unforced. That’s the game right there. It’s nothing they did. It’s us. It’s all us,” said Harden.
Harden is especially bewildered about the sudden increase in turnovers after the Clippers had improved in this area leading up to the playoffs. He emphasized the importance of reviewing game footage to identify what went wrong.
Kawhi Leonard’s Take on Performance
Forward Kawhi Leonard was notably affected by the turnover problem, recording seven of his own. He recognizes the need for decisive action on the court, stating,
“We just have to be decisive, get more into attack-mode situations, and that’s it,” said Leonard.
Additionally, he highlighted the necessity to learn from these mistakes and ensure the team is prepared for the next challenge.
Defensive Rebounds and Strategy Moving Forward
Besides turnovers, the Clippers also struggled with rebounding, allowing 12 offensive rebounds to the Nuggets, which included key contributions from Aaron Gordon and Russell Westbrook. Harden pointed out the need for greater focus on offense, stating,
“We got to get to the paint, get to the paint and good things happen for us,” he remarked.
Coach Lue’s Perspective
Despite the defeat, Coach Tyronn Lue remains optimistic about his team’s performance. The Clippers outshot the Nuggets 50.0% to 43.6% and had comparable assists and rebounds, showing flashes of potential. “We’re in good shape… But if you turn it over 20 times against the team that is No. 1 in offensive transition, then you’re going to lose the game,” Lue outlined. His emphasis on taking care of the basketball and controlling the glass will be key components for improvement in Game 2.
Harden Achieves Milestones
In the aftermath of Game 1, Harden also achieved personal milestones, surpassing John Havlicek for 14th place on the NBA’s all-time playoff points list with a total of 3,796 postseason points. He also moved past Larry Bird for eighth in playoff assists, now boasting 1,072 assists.
Looking Ahead
As they prepare for Game 2 at Denver’s Ball Arena, the Clippers are eager to rectify the mistakes that led to their opening game loss. With the series set to transition to the Intuit Dome for Games 3 and 4, taking one game on the road could set a positive momentum heading back home.
Game 2 will be pivotal for the Clippers as they strive to even the series and regain confidence against a formidable Nuggets squad.
