On Saturday morning, April 12, a team from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) arrived at the scene to conduct a necropsy on the whale. Glenn Gray, the CEO of PMMC based in Laguna Beach, stated that the cause of death has yet to be determined. ‘We are currently examining the whale to gather more insights into the circumstances surrounding its death,’ he explained.

City’s Response and Action Plan

Following the discovery, Huntington Beach Marine Safety officials cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. Jennifer Carey, a spokesperson for the city, confirmed that the Public Works Department has secured authorization from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and PMMC to proceed with the burial of the whale, scheduled for Sunday morning.

This incident comes shortly after a minke whale was found deceased in Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor, where it had been spotted swimming for several days. Such occurrences may raise concerns regarding the health of marine ecosystems along the coast.
