The Palisades and Eaton wildfires have obliterated thousands of residences in Los Angeles County, forcing displaced individuals into regions grappling with ongoing housing deficits.
At present, many of the displaced individuals are residing in hotels, shelters, or with friends and family members. Some individuals may be seeking a more stable rental situation. More will soon arrive.
If you’re in search of accommodation, there are several key points you need to be aware of.
This article is offered at no cost to assist in keeping our community secure and supported during these catastrophic fires.
temporary accommodation
Airbnb.org, a charitable organization collaborating with Airbnb hosts, is providing complimentary temporary accommodation to individuals displaced by the wildfires.
Those requiring shelter can complete an application here with 211 LA, the organization collaborating with Airbnb.org on this program.
Local hotels are also providing reduced rates. For additional details, see here and here.
price manipulation
Earlier this week, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a state of emergency for Los Angeles County, implementing safeguards against price manipulation.
This typically means landlords cannot charge more than 10% above what they were charging or advertising prior to the state of emergency taking effect on Jan. 7, as stated by the California Attorney General’s Office. These anti-price gouging measures extend beyond the housing sector to include goods like food, gas, and medicine.
There are also protections in place if you did not rent or advertise your property before the state of emergency. In these scenarios, the attorney general’s office indicates that landlords cannot charge more than 160 percent of the fair market rate, as assessed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta urged the public to report price manipulation to his office using the online form available here.
Price manipulation protections generally remain in effect for 30 days following the declaration of a state of emergency, but extensions may occur.
The tenant advocacy organization Economic Survival Coalition is also conducting Saturday workshops for current renters and those in search of a rental to learn more about their rights.
