Casualties of the LA firestorm
The most devastating wildfires in the city’s history have resulted in 27 fatalities as of Friday, which includes 17 from the Eaton Fire and 10 from the Palisades Fire. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna cautioned that these figures are likely to increase alarmingly.
“The search persists,” Luna stated during a press briefing Thursday morning. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department informed the Times on Thursday that 31 individuals remain missing, with 24 unaccounted from the Eaton Fire and seven from the Palisades Fire.
A colleague of mine has assembled a list of the individuals who perished in the fire. Below are some of their narratives.
A regular day turned tragic for 95-year-old Darris Curry.
In his youth, Darris Curry was part of the Golden Age of Black Hollywood, featuring in films such as “The Ten Commandments,” “Lady Sings the Blues,” and “The Blues Brothers,” with a career that lasted several decades.
In her twilight years, she was cherished as a grandmother, affectionately known as Mama D.
On the morning of January 7, her granddaughter, Darris Kelley, escorted her to multiple medical appointments. On their way back to Curry’s residence in Altadena, no threats appeared to be near. “I could sense a hint of smoke,” Kelly noted. “But honestly, it felt like a typical day in Altadena.”
The following morning, Kelley received a text from her grandmother’s landlord inquiring if anyone was there to collect her due to the evacuation notice.
She dialed 911, aiming to have the police retrieve her grandmother; however, after being rerouted several times, she opted to go to her grandmother’s home personally.
By then, it was too late. Curry’s residence lay in ruins. The only items left were a blue Cadillac, a refrigerator, an exercise bicycle, and a metal-framed mattress.
“She embodied energy, elegance, and an unmatched passion for life,” the family expressed on the GoFundMe page. “Her presence illuminated our family reunions, her wisdom led us through trials, and her laughter infused joy into every occasion.”
Those familiar with Malibu recognize the Crab Shack, a quaint, barn-red, 100-year-old building situated on a hillside a few kilometers south of the pier.
And if you’re acquainted with the Crab Shack, you undoubtedly know its proprietor, Randall Miodo (commonly recognized as Randy, Crawdaddy, or just Crow), as noted by my colleague Corinne Partey.
“The entire community was familiar with Crow,” shared friend Todd Proctor with Purtill. “It didn’t matter if you arrived in a Bentley or thumbed a ride to the beach. You knew Crow, and you adored him.”
With the Palisades Fire threatening on January 7, he reached out to his mother to inform her that he possessed a hose and intended to battle to salvage the home.
His remains were found amid the charred debris of his residence. According to the Malibu Times, he was clutching a kitten.
Altadena woman
survived the Eaton Fire. her sibling perished
The remains of Shaw were discovered in the corridor outside the entrance of the residence where his family had resided for over fifty years. He held a garden hose.
Shaw relished traveling to various cities across the United States and was captivated by Route 66. My sister Shari and I enjoyed weekend excursions to Reno, Lake Tahoe, San Diego, and Palm Springs. They cherished their time together.
“When you are younger, you don’t really value your siblings,” states Shari. “As we matured, our bond developed. … He was a wonderful individual.”
Annette Rossilli’s remains were located in her vehicle after she refused to abandon her pet.
As the fire drew closer to Pacific Palisades, Annette Rossilli’s caretakers and neighbors made attempts to evacuate her. She rejected all assistance, expressing her desire to remain with her pets: two parrots, a canary, a turtle, and a dog.
The remains of the 85-year-old woman were located within a car outside her Pacific Palisades residence. “She was an incredibly kind woman, very amiable and full of vitality,” stated Faye Vahadani, owner of Lux Home Care.
