SOLANA BEACH — Santa Fe Christian concluded one of its most outstanding weeks of the season on Friday by establishing a 10-point margin in the opening quarter and triumphing over Maranatha Christian 64-43.
This marked the third Coastal League victory of the week for No. 7 SFC (18-4, 3-0), which previously defeated Francis Parker 63-56 and La Jolla Country Day 58-56.
“With only a handful of regular season matches remaining, now is an excellent time to perform well,” stated SFC coach Matt Carlino. “Our league (which includes Bishop’s) is challenging, but we engaged in a solid nonleague schedule and faced formidable opponents.”
“We executed remarkably strong defense. I mean exceptionally strong defense.”
“The players grasp what we’re teaching,” Carlino remarked after being informed that his squad had compelled 18 turnovers.
“This is a unique team.”
This team features leading scorers Dax Hall and Jaden Hitipew.
Hall, who registered 15 points and seven rebounds on Friday, was recognized as an all-league player last season.
“I believe this could be the finest team in school history, considering how effectively we play defense,” said Hall, a junior.
“We faced some challenging defeats early on, but starting off 3-0 in league competition is enormous.”
“And Jayden is integrating really well. It was somewhat difficult initially to learn our defensive system, but he’s adapting nicely. We’re also great buddies off the court.”
Hitipeuw, who hails from Austria, commutes from Alpine to SFC daily.
Hitipyu, a junior noted for his jumping ability, quickness on the court, and passing skills, topped all scorers with 17 points and seven rebounds. He moved to the United States to pursue the chance to play in college.
“I competed in basketball in Europe for six years,” Hitipew explained. “I spent the last two years at an academy in Spain.”
“Here, I play as a forward, but I have always been a guard and a playmaker, so my passing is strong.”
Division I SFC has also secured victories against La Costa Canyon, El Camino, and fourth-place Mission Bay (56-49).
One of their four defeats was against No. 1 Montgomery (94-66).
Carlino mentioned that his sole loss in the tournament, against Los Angeles Loyola, remains prominent in his memory.
“We competed against some truly capable teams and gained substantial experience,” Hall commented. “Honestly, I believe this team has its limitations.”
For SFC, Cohen Sponsel contributed 9 points, including a 3-point shot.
Maranatha Christian (11-9, 1-1), a Division 3 team, was spearheaded by Ryan Ownby’s 14 points, with him scoring 10 points solely in the fourth quarter.
Will Ralston added 11 points, and Shane Peter led all rebounders with 12 rebounds along with six points.
Of the 13 athletes on SFC’s roster, several are sophomores or juniors.
