Record Heat Wave in Southern California Leads to Multiple Rescues
As Southern California experiences an unprecedented heat wave, emergency services were mobilized to assist numerous individuals affected by soaring temperatures, which climbed into the high 90s.
Orange County Rescues
In Orange County, the day saw at least 15 people being rescued due to heat-related health incidents. Capt. Thanh Nguyen of the Orange County Fire Authority reported that among those rescued were a group of 11 individuals located on Newport Coast trails. Of these:
- Two individuals were taken to a local hospital.
- Five were evaluated but chose not to receive further medical assistance.
- Four suffered from heat exhaustion.
Rescue efforts also included four hikers in the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, where temperatures reached 96 degrees. Three of the hikers displayed symptoms of heat-related distress, leading to one being airlifted for urgent medical care.
Incidents Across Riverside County
Riverside County reported nine additional rescues on the same day, with incidents occurring in towns such as Temecula, Palm Desert, and Moreno Valley. Notably, a dehydrated hiker was airlifted at Big Bear Canyon Loop as temperatures hit 99 degrees, with officials facilitating their transport to a nearby hospital.
Emergency Response in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, a 55-year-old woman was airlifted from the Hollywood Hills due to heat exhaustion. Griffith Park rangers alerted the Los Angeles Fire Department, who promptly assessed her condition before transporting her to a hospital.
Safety Recommendations
As the heat wave continues, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution. Capt. Nguyen emphasized, “Unless you’ve trained for heat and this tough terrain, we strongly encourage everyone to wait until it cools down.”

According to the National Weather Service, conditions are expected to improve by Sunday, transitioning into cooler weather and the potential for overcast skies early next week, providing some relief to residents.
