An emergency vehicle, a non-drinkable water truck, and approximately a dozen civilian firefighters were deployed outside Rick Caruso’s Pacific Palisades residence on Sunday afternoon.
The firefighters represent five distinct private fire services and mentioned they were contracted by a Los Angeles property developer to safeguard his estate and the vicinity.
“And I heard there were additional units on the way,” stated firefighter Laron Whitfield, who arrived on Friday from Riverside with a crew named Wildland. “He’s wise, and we aim to be prepared.”
Caruso is among the residential and commercial property owners who dispatched private firefighters to assist during the devastating firestorm that overwhelmed LA’s firefighting resources.
Another firefighter indicated he had been on duty for 48 hours to secure Caruso’s “particularly his residence but also the surrounding vicinity” and would remain at the location until 9 a.m. Monday.
“And two individuals will come to replace me and my partner,” he mentioned.
His primary employment is with the Los Alamitos Fire Department, but with the blaze intensifying since Tuesday, he stated he accepted the job for the first time while off-duty. He was hired by a firm called West Coast Water Tenders. The company’s website claims it provides “2,500 to 4,000 gallon tactical water trucks, screening tools, and mobile flame retardant stations.”
A third firefighter, who identified himself as Shane, remarked that the situation seemed stable in the area south of Sunset Boulevard, but “we’re just exercising caution.”
They mentioned that prices for private firefighting services differ by agreement, with one estimate averaging around $20 per hour.
Caruso, a candidate for the 2022 Los Angeles mayoral election, owns multiple shopping centers, including the Globe, Americana in Glendale, and Palisades Village, a fire-affected but still intact retail and residential complex located in the heart of Palisades.
He informed The New York Times on Wednesday that private fire services were called in to protect the complex, which features a cinema, Erewhon grocery store, eateries, and retailers such as Lululemon and Reformation.
A request for comment to Mr. Caruso’s lawyer on Sunday afternoon was not promptly acknowledged.
Private fire brigades have sparked controversy in recent years, becoming emblematic of privilege for the affluent and receiving criticism for exacerbating class disparities during emergencies.
Insurers contend that these services yield mutual benefits. If a homeowner’s property is preserved, the insurance company avoids substantial payouts. They may be contracted through an insurance provider or directly hired by affluent property owners.
