Palisades, Eaton Fires Damage Or Destroy These Los Angeles County

Wildfires sparked by the worst storm in a decade have swept through Southern California, causing widespread destruction and misery.

The Palisades Fire destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. In the San Gabriel Valley, the Eaton Fire damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings, particularly hitting the communities of Altadena and Sierra Madre. In each region, fires devastated communities.

Three dangerous, fast-spreading wildfires broke out in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, January 7th. The wildfires are driven by the dynamic Santa Ana storm, with strong wind gusts of 40 mph to 80 mph, making conditions worst in the foothills and mountains.

Below are landmarks, businesses, schools and other notable structures that have been confirmed to have been damaged or destroyed by fire. We will update this list as we learn more.

Eaton Fire

Fox Restaurant in Altadena. The 69-year-old restaurant was destroyed in the fire, according to an Instagram post from the restaurant.

Bunny Museum, Altadena

Side Pie Pizza Restaurant, Altadena

Altadena Golf Course General Manager Johnny Eusebio said the course was lost to the fire (related news).

Altadena Senior Center, Altadena.

Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center. The leaders made the announcement in a letter addressed to believers on their website.

Altadena Community Church UCC. I checked on the church’s website.

Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Altadena. I checked on the church’s website.

Five schools in Altadena sustained “significant damage” in the Eaton fire, according to a preliminary assessment of Pasadena Unified School District schools. Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco said Elliott Arts Magnet School, Aveson Charter School, Loma Alta Elementary School and Noyes Elementary School were damaged in the fire. Approximately 80% of Franklin Elementary School, which was closed in 2020, was damaged.

Malibu’s Reel Inn has been a beloved seafood restaurant for 36 years. I confirmed this on the store’s Instagram.

Moonshadows is probably the most popular restaurant on the beach in Los Angeles, built on stilts/pylons above the sand.

Owners Sawai Teplian and her husband Nikorn Sriwichairumpang, Chorada Tai, immigrated to the United States with the dream of opening a restaurant. They have owned the restaurant since 2000, according to Malibu Magazine.

Gladstones was the highest grossing independent restaurant in the United States in 2009. Former Mayor Dick Riordan owned the restaurant for more than 20 years.

A storied business: The owners of the Malibu Feed Bin, a landmark pet supply store that opened in 1961 for horse owners and dog lovers, said their store was “lost” in a wildfire, according to The Independent. “I was killed,” he announced.

Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio: Posted on Instagram Story: “We lost our tasting room in yesterday’s fire, but all our staff are safe.” Photos and videos have also been posted showing the remains of a giant blue chair and yellow table that stood outside the outdoor spot.
