Now She's Crazy About Montecito

Actress Carol Burnett has completed extensive renovations on the Santa Barbara home she bought for about $2 million earlier this year.

Mr. Burnett, 66, is in New York preparing for the Oct. 30 previews and Nov. 21 opening of his Broadway production, the Stephen Sondheim musical revue “Putting It Together.”

“The house was gorgeous and now it’s amazing because she redid the whole house,” the source said. The house is located in Santa Barbara’s Montecito neighborhood.

Barnett has a penthouse on Wilshire Boulevard, which he has owned since 1997. The Emmy Award-winning actress, who played Helen Hunt’s mother on the NBC sitcom “Mad About You” (1996-99), plans to stay there for the duration of her visit. Although Montecito is a town, he “makes Montecito his first home,” the source added.

Barnett hired her friend, interior designer Anita Ludovici de Domenico, to redo the house, which was built in 1977 but has recently been renovated. De Domenico designed the interior of Barnett’s previous home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “The current Montecito home is similar to the Santa Fe home, but with ocean views,” the source said.

The wall that separated the Montecito home’s dining room and living room was torn down, a bath built in the master suite, and the kitchen rearranged. The Mediterranean-style home has three bedrooms and is located on a lot of approximately 5,000 square feet.

The actress was represented in the purchase by Sue Kogen and Maureen Steinberg of Re/Max Center in Encino and Barbara Koutnik of Coldwell Banker in Montecito. Cogen is married to Ernie Cogen, a writer on Burnett’s TV variety show that aired from 1967 to 1979, and she is married to Jay Cogen, who just won an Emmy for comedy writing for “Frasier.” -She is also Kogen’s mother.
