Bel Air, which gained fame in the 1920s as a favorite address of the LA elite, was originally intended as a “gentleman’s estate” by oil tycoon Alfonzo Edward Bell. Although much of Old Hollywood’s luxury real estate has been demolished to make way for modern architecture, the city’s glitz and glamor still maintains its iconic reputation.
In 2017, Bel Air recorded 102 single-family home sales of $2 million, an increase of about 40 units from the previous year. There were 21 sales of $10 million or more, up from 14 in 2016.
$88 million — Questa Way
Jay-Z and Beyoncé, the hip-hop power couple with a long history in the Westside rental market, became new Los Angeles homeowners in August when they purchased a newly constructed mansion on Cuesta Way.
The modern showplace is located behind walls and gates and consists of six buildings with approximately 30,000 square feet of living space. The monolithic complex includes a spa, wellness facilities, media room and four outdoor swimming pools. The windows and pocket glass walls are bulletproof.
Patios and terraces create an additional 10,000 square feet of outdoor living space. There is also a full basketball court within two acres of the property.
The property, developed by Dean McKillen, was not offered for sale to the public, but the asking price was $135 million, real estate sources said.
$41 million — Stradera Road
On Stradella Road, the former address of blockbuster director and producer Michael Bay sold for $4 million less than the asking price in December.
Originally designed and built in 1976 by Jack Warner, this modern home was recently renovated and expanded to 15,000 square feet by Saota Architecture.
The multi-level floor plan includes a designer-decorated kitchen, wine room, and home theater. The indoor wellness center includes a massage room, steam room, sauna, and gym. There are five bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
This home sits on nearly an acre of land with expansive outdoor living space and an infinity edge swimming pool. The grounds offer views of the Los Angeles Basin, Baldy Mountain, and Santa Monica Bay.
Agent James Harris and David Parnes acted as listing agents. Alexander Tarigo of Rodeo Realty represented the buyer, an entity associated with billionaire real estate developer Jay Paul.
$40.8 million – Delfern Drive
Billionaire investor Nicholas Berggruen bought the prestigious Edie Goetz property on Delfern Drive in April from former Northwest Airlines Chairman Gary L. Wilson.
Once owned by William Getz, president of Universal International Pictures, and his wife, Edie Meyer Getz, the grand public room of this Georgian Colonial mansion once hosted stars such as Judy Garland and Cary Grant. It was used as a venue for Hollywood parties.
The approximately 15,000-square-foot interior includes an Art Deco library/bar, 11 bedrooms, and 14 bathrooms.
Jeffrey Hyland and Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland co-listed the property with Aaron Carman of John Arlow Group. Linda May of Hilton & Hyland represented the buyer.
$30 million – Delfern Drive
Manny Mashouf, the founder of the Bebe clothing brand, sold his property on Delfern Drive in April for $15 million less than the original asking price, records show.
The 20,000 square foot property opens to a two-story foyer boasting 26-foot ceilings. Arched doorways lead to living spaces including a formal dining area, billiards room, and walnut-paneled wet bar.
The master suite has two fireplaces and two private terraces, for a total of eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.
The agency’s David Parnes maintained the list. Fellow agent Kelsey Clune represented the buyer.
$27 million – Charing Cross Road
In May, film producer Mario Casal sold a large, traditional-style property opposite the Playboy Mansions on Charing Cross Road.
More than 2 acres of park-like grounds include multiple lawns and patios, tennis courts, a pool, and a spa. Inside, approximately 6,600 square feet of living space includes five bedrooms and six bathrooms.
Jade Mills of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage served as listing agent. Stephen Resnick and Jonathan Nash of Hilton & Hyland represented the buyer.
$24 million – Bellagio Avenue
A long brick driveway winds up to this Bellagio Road property, which was sold in November. Records show the Mediterranean-style mansion, built in 1927, was on the market for as much as $25 million.
The two-story entryway has a domed spiral staircase that wraps around the room. More than 10,000 square feet of living space includes a terracotta-tiled living room with beamed ceilings and a wood-paneled family room.
The master suite, one of five bedrooms, has separate bathrooms for men and women.
