The historic Herbert N. Strauss mansion (more famous in recent years as the home of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein) just went on the market for $51 million.

The 28,000-square-foot French neoclassical mansion, one of New York City’s largest private residences, was raided by the FBI in 2019 as part of an investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking allegations. A year later, it was listed for sale for $88 million, and most recently for $65 million.

This seven-story townhouse dates back to 1930 when it was commissioned by Herbert Strauss, the son of co-owner of the Macy’s department store chain. After Strauss, it was used as a hospital by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and later by Birch Wasen School as a schoolhouse. Billionaire businessman Leslie Wexner bought it for $13.2 million in 1989 and Epstein acquired it in the 1990s.

Epstein, who died by suicide in his prison cell two years ago after being arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges, transformed the compound into an eccentric space filled with custom rooms and bizarre artefacts during his stay there. Ta.

This was most vividly introduced by Vicki Ward in her 2003 Vanity Fair article, “The Talented Mr. Epstein.” She called the house her “private Xanadu,” filled with servants, an entrance hall lined with individually framed centerpieces, and a marble entryway with a twice-life-size sculpture of a naked African warrior. , and noticed an office with a stuffed black poodle on the chair. grand piano.

Epstein told Ward: But I want people to think about what a stuffed dog means. ”

Recent photos show the home maintains a formal style with crystal chandeliers, wood-paneled walls, and a marble fireplace. Stone terraces on the upper floors offer views of Central Park and the New York City skyline.

The mansion is just one of the properties Epstein has amassed across the country. He also owned a 7,500-acre New Mexico ranch with an airplane hangar, a waterfront mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, and a private island in the Caribbean known as Little St. James.

Adam D. Modlin of Modlin Group handled the listing.
