January 13, 2024: Los Angeles Gang Detained for Complex Bear Costume Insurance Fraud Operation
In an unusual twist, four individuals from the Los Angeles region were detained on January 13, 2024, for allegedly orchestrating automobile burglaries while clad in bear costumes to perpetrate insurance fraud. The individuals—recognized as Ruben Tamrazian, 26; Ararat Chirkinian, 39; Vahe Muradkhanyan, 32; and Alfiya Zuckerman, 39—are charged with submitting fraudulent insurance claims exceeding $140,000, claiming that bears had vandalized their high-end vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Ghost and two Mercedes models.
The California Department of Insurance initiated an inquiry after receiving dubious claims supported by video evidence that supposedly showed bears inflicting interior damage to the cars. Upon detailed scrutiny, the footage showed unnatural movements that were inconsistent with actual bear behavior. A biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that the videos featured people in bear outfits. Further searches of the suspects’ homes resulted in the discovery of bear suits and metallic claw-like tools believed to have been involved in the operation.
Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara remarked, “This intricate fraud operation not only aimed to mislead insurance firms but also exploited wildlife imagery to carry out illicit activities.” The suspects are facing allegations of insurance fraud and conspiracy. Authorities are utilizing this case to underscore the necessity of vigilance against deceptive claims, which can result in elevated premiums for all policyholders. The investigation is still underway to uncover if any additional fraudulent actions are linked to this group.
