One woman died and three others were rushed to the hospital after a fire broke out at a Panorama City townhouse early Saturday morning, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.
“Unfortunately, one patient was unable to receive medical help and was pronounced dead at the scene,” the fire department said in a statement.
Fire officials said the survivors included an 83-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and another man whose age was unknown. Neither the deceased nor the survivors have been identified.
The fire was reported at 3:31 a.m. in the 9200 block of North Wakefield Avenue, fire officials said. When firefighters arrived, they found three two-story townhouses in a row, one engulfed in flames and one starting to burn.
It took 70 firefighters and 43 minutes to bring down the building, the fire department said, and firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading to a third townhouse, which is adjacent to two others. Arson investigators have begun investigating the cause of the fire.
