Landmark Hillcrest Cinemas, A Longtime Hub For Independent Films, Will

The landmark Hillcrest Cinemas will close on January 6th after more than 30 years.

The theater’s performance company and Landmark’s parent company, Cohen Media Group, did not respond to requests for comment.

The Fifth Avenue Theater, which specializes in showing independent films, opened in 1991 in the newly constructed Village Hillcrest Mall. At the time, it was a novel complex with offices, restaurants, and a theater.

The theater’s opening day movie list is currently unknown, but independent films released that year included “My Own Private Idaho” and “The Rapture.”

Landmark closed several stores as the pandemic changed viewing habits, with personal and home screens increasingly outpacing movie theaters. The Ken Cinema on Adams Avenue in Kensington closed in March 2020.

It’s been another tough year for Landmark owners. A judge ruled that Landmark Theaters would be subject to a foreclosure auction because of its parent company’s debts. However, there were no bidders for the theater chain at the November auction, so Hollywood news outlet Deadline says the theater chain may continue with “business as usual.”

As Hillcrest Movie Theater prepares to close, posters are posted outside promoting the theater’s final films: “A Complete Unknown,” “Queer,” “Wicked” and “Anora.”

Screening times can be found on the company’s website. For any other concerns, a small sign in the theater lobby says to email [email protected].
