On Saturday, May 13, 2023, the Clockshop arts organization and California State Parks came together to host the 3rd Annual Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, located next to historic Chinatown in downtown Los Angeles. The event, which ran from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, was a free, family-friendly celebration of community, creativity, and the beauty of public green spaces.
The festival brought people of all ages together for a day of kite flying and artistic expression. Attendees had the unique opportunity to watch expert kite flyers in action, as they soared their colorful kites high above the park. Additionally, kite masters Stevie Choi and Scott Skinner led workshops, offering visitors a chance to learn the techniques behind flying kites and to deepen their appreciation for the art of kite making.
In addition to the kite flying, the festival featured art exhibitions and interactive art-making workshops that allowed attendees to tap into their own creativity. Local community organizations, such as Self Help Graphics, the 100 Acre Park Partnership, and ADCCLA/Project Monarch, were on hand to connect with the community and share their missions. These organizations work to empower and support the local community, making their presence at the event even more meaningful.
The festival was filled with vibrant music and entertainment, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere for all attendees. It served as a reminder of the importance of public spaces and community engagement, all while celebrating the joy of kite flying. The Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival provided a perfect opportunity for families and community members to connect, learn, and enjoy a day of art, culture, and fun.
